Natangora is a essential part of the Vanuatu lifestyle. The leaves of the trees are used to make thatch which covers many of the houses and structures and is used in all types of handcrafts
The seeds are pictured above and as they dry out they are hallow with a small hard seed inside. These seeds can be strung together in their natural condition or they can be dried and peeled and then carved into jewelry or in the case with Moses Aleck, into the most beautiful small souvenirs that the tourists to Port Vila are eating up.
Aleck lives in Luganville on the island of Santo and on his first trip to Port Vila, he happened into the Lotus Day Spa & Café and showed me his work, which is exquisite. I promptly told him that I would mentor him and purchased the statue of the two dolphins embracing a heart in the photo at the top as well as the diver with the USS Calvin Coolidge in the second photo.
Alex has over 60 designs as well as napkin rings and is planning on coming back to Port Vila to put his carvings in more of the shops as well as a new display that will be made for Nivan art at the Lotus Day Spa & Café.
Hopefully at some point we can get them into our online store for those of you can not get to Port Vila.
If you would like to order them for your shop, you can reach Moses on his cell phone +678 5371154.
